So you might want to know a little bit about the name, Andromeda. In the constellation Andromeda, the name is based on a greek mythological princess. The name Andromeda means "the guardian of men." (the constellation is near Pegasus) Now another name that the Andromeda galaxy is known by is Messier Object 31, or M31. So I will call the galaxy M31 from here on out! Okay, so M31 is our galaxies nearest neighbor in the Local Group. M31 is the closest galaxy to us, the Milky Way.

It is a spiral galaxy and is about 228,000 light-years in width.! Wow!...I know! Studies show that Andromeda's halo may actually overlap the Milky Way. M31 is made up of spiral arms, a halo, global clusters, and a central bulge.(it is also called the nucleus) The halo and the nucleus together are called the spherical component.

M31 is composed of billions of stars and together with our galaxy dominates the Local Group. It takes about 2 million years for its light to reach us! In 1887 Isaac Roberts took the first picture(s) of the Andromeda "Nebula". This is a Rosat image.

M31 has a bunch of star systems that are giving out high energy radiation. No one really knows why, but M31 has more X-ray sources near its center then we do.
