California Sea Lions are the most numerous type all up and down the Pacific Coast from California to British Columbia. They are commonly pressed into service as the circus seals we are all familar with. They weigh more than most adult humans, and large male specimens can weigh a half ton. They eat about 14% of their body weight every day, feeding mainly on octopus, squid, and fish. They are able to dive to 1,000 feet deep in search of their prey. This species is the fastest species of sea lion, seals or walruses, and can swim at 25 mph. Unfortunately, Killer Whales can swim at up to 30 mph, so are a very dangerous adversary.Male California sea lions are commonly seen in Oregon from September through May. California sea lions do not breed in Oregon though a few young animals may remain in Oregon during summer months while most return to California’s Channel Islands to breed. Female California sea lions are a rare event in Oregon as most stay in California near the breeding rookeries. During September through May California sea lions can be found in many bays, estuaries and on of offshore sites along the coast, often hauled-out in the same locations as Steller sea lions. Some pass through Oregon to head north to feed during fall and winter months. California sea lions are a dark brown color and have a bark kind of like a dog. In older males they may have a light colored patch on the top of their heads. Adult males can be 7 feet in length and weigh up to 1,000 pounds. You can tell the difference between California and Steller sea lions primarily by their color, size, and the California’s distinctive bark. California sea lions can get used to being around people and will often steal fish and bait from fishermen and crabbers. When they are on land, sea lions gather in large groups (as many as 1,000 individuals) and may lie near and on top of each other. In the water, they may float on the surface in small groups called rafts. Younger sea lions, more playful than adults, ride the surf and chase each other. At the beginning of the breeding season, males establish a territory by barking, biting, and shoving. Although they patrol their territory's boundaries, they do not prevent females from leaving. Sea lions are known for there intelligence, playfulness, and there barking. Sea lions have dog like faces. Some people think there are related to dogs but really there are not. At around age five male sea lions develope a bony bump on there head called a sagittal crest. The bump gets lighter with age. The whiskers sea lion have, which are called vibrissae, help with there sense of touch. The little ears that the sea lions have give them a great sence of hearing. Sea lions have great eye sight too. They can not see color though. The birth of California sea lions have almost tripled since 1975. The population of the sea lions are about 200,000. at this point. But with the fishermen and pesticieds the population could be indanger. When diving deep, California sea lions slow their heart rates to allow them to remain underwater for nearly ten minutes before surfacing to breathe. This ability gives them an edge in the pursuit of the fish, squid, and shellfish that make up their primary diet. The sea lion's ancient ancestors, like those of whales and dolphins, lived on land. The modern animal is well adapted to an aquatic environment, with its streamlined body and powerful flippers. (The rear flippers rotate forward to allow a California sea lion to move surprisingly well on land.) California sea lions also boast thick layers of blubber to insulate their bodies from the chill of marine waters. New born baby sea lions are about seventy-five centimeters long. One of the biggest dangers today for sea lions is becoming intangled in plastic pollution. Steller sea lions and fur sea lions are indanger. They can only be killed if they try to harm someone. Steller sea lion pups are born black and can wiegh as much as 18-22kg. They are also about one meter in length. Which is 3.3 meters. Baby sea lions can tell there mother out from hundreds of sea lions just by the sound she makes. Steller sea lions are the largest type of sea lions. They have thick hairy necks that looks like a lions mane. Sea lions don't have to drink water they get enough water from the food they eat. The Californie sea lion is the sea lion you will most often see in the curcuses and in animal shows. Another name of the Steller sea lion is the Northern Sea-Lion. Sea lions are mammals. The date that the Steller Sea Lions were listed as indangered was April 10, 1990. The population is going up by 8% each year!
