Pigs originated from Eurasian Wild Boars. here are very many kinds of swine these days. Such as the cross which is the most common can be bred by two different kinds of pigs. The way these pigs are born though are by a sow (which is the mom) and a boar, also known as a stud (which is the dad). Another way you can breed a sow though is with a stick. You must put the semen in the stick then shove the stick in to the sows potty and inject the semen. This sounds wierd but it does work. Other breeds of pigs are the landrace which are white and have floppy ears a lot like the chester but with a longer nose and a very very long body, theres the chester which is a pig with a smaller nose and a smaller body.

A few other common pigs would be the yorkshire which is all white, the duroc which is brown/dark brown, the spot which has black, gray, and white spots on it and the hampshire which has a white or gray belt at the mid-belly range and the rest of it is black and sometimes the hair near the pasterns and dewclaws can be white too. Although there are other pig breeds out there these are the main ones. Boars seem to sell at higher prices cause they could have the best genetics but the sows can tend to get to those high prices sometimes. Also did you know that pigs can live on an average of fifteen to twenty years. Pigs can run a seven minute mile too they also, average about forty-four teeth.

Most people think that pigs are dumb and don't do anything. The truth is that they're actually smater than any other cat or dog. Pigs are very intelligent and learn quickly. They pick up tricks faster than dogs. What you don't know though is that the reason people say that they don't do anything is cause they play in the mud almost all day. Pigs have to stay in the mud though cause they don't have a choice these pigs can't sweat so therefore they're forced to mess around in the mud. Another reason they need to play in the mud is cause they are easily sunburned. These pigs have no sweat glands so they have to play in the mud. One other way they can be cooled down is by putting some cold water behind their ears and one the belly. The reson you put the water there is because those are the warmer areas on the pigs and if you put it all over the pig they will over heat. So if your in 4-H just remember never to put cold water all over the pig but behind the ears and on the belly. Piglets can also learn their names by two to three weeks of age and respond when called.

Pigs have a great sense of smell also. Their powerful but sensitive snout is a highly developed sense organ. Pigs also have a great field vision, because their eyes are on the sides of their heads. These pigs rank #4 in animal intelligence too behind the chimpanzees, dolphins and elephants. Pigs are very social animals as well. They form close bonds with eachother and other species. They enjoy close contact and will lie close together when resting. Grunting with their snout is a way that these animals interact with one another.

A sow can give birth to a litter containing seven to twelve piglets, about twice a year. The gestation (time pregnant) period of a sow is one hundred forty-four days
(3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days). A baby pig, or piglet, weighs about 1.5 kilograms at birth and will double its weight in just seven days. Weaning occurs at three months of age, but young pigs continue to live with their mothers. Weining means getting the pigs off the mom's nipple and on water or ground feed. Two or more sows might join together in an extended family. Down below is a sow which means that she has had piglets and if they haven't they are called gits. As you notice this sow has a curl in her tail. Most of the studs up top don't have as long of a tail as this sow. The reason for this is cause farmers either don't cut the tails, they do cut the tails some or they just snip it a little. Duroc's normally have the longer more curlier tails opposed to other pigs.
