In today's world, all people should work to reduce their energy consumption. Research and development is being done to determine what resources may be valuable that are presently being wasted.

Biomass is an organic material made from plants and animals. When biomass is burned it releases heat. If wood, waste, or garbage is burned, it can produce steam for making electricity or provide heat for homes and industries. Burning biomass isn't the only way to release energy, it can also be converted into transportation fuels and methane gas, like ethanol and biodiesel. The most common form of biomass is wood. People use to use wood for cooking and heat. Now wood and waste provide only 2% of the energy in the US.poop2.gif

Another source of biomass is our garbage, also called municipal solid waste (
MSW). Trash that comes from plant or animal waste is biomass. Food scraps, lawn clippings, and leaves are all examples of biomass trash. Materials that are made out of glass, plastic, and metals are not biomass because they are made out of non-renewable materials. MSW can be a source of energy by either burning MSW in waste-to-energy plants, or by capturing biogas. In waste-to-energy plants, trash is burned to produce steam that can be used either to heat buildings or to generate electricity. In landfills, biomass rots and releases methane gas, which is also called biogas or landfill gas. Some landfills have a system that collects the methane gas so that it can be used as a fuel source. Some dairy farmers collect biogas from tanks called "digesters
" where they put all of the muck and manure from their barns. There are some state programs that can give funding to help livestock producers develop anaerobic digester systems.


One of the biggest challenges for livestock farmers is managing their manure and process water in a safe and low-odor way. Farmers face strict regulations regarding their farm's waste. Biogas systems are also known as anaerobic digesters.Biogas systems have environmental benefits that are better than conventional liquid and slurry manure systems. The benefits are odor control, improved air and water quality, improved nutrient management, and the ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and capture biogas. A digester helps by treating the waste and generates biogas, electricity, other fuel sources, and hot water for use on the farm. Biogas is a renewable source of energy with lower environmental impacts than conventional fossil fuel. There are four basic components in a biogas recovery system. They are; a digester, a gas handling system, a gas-use device and a manure storage tank or pond. During anaerobic digestion bacteria breaks down manure into biogas which is approximately 60-70 percent methane and 30-40 percent carbon dioxide. In addition to generating biogas, anaerobic digestion changes the compostition of manure creating high-quality fertilizer, animal bedding, and composting to reduce the Nitrogen, Phoshorus, and Potassium content that is being spread on their land. Farmers can utilize the energy created to fuel their farms. B
iomass fuels provide about 3 percent of the energy used in the United States. Anerobic digesters can be built rigtht on the dairy farm. The digester is also a form of money for a farm while killing weed seeds, reducing odors, and destroying 99% of the pathegons, all while creating solids for the farm and capturing methane that can be turned into Renewable Energy Credits. People in the USA are trying to develop ways to burn more biomass and less fossil fuels. Using biomass for energy can cut back on waste and support agricultural products grown in the United States. Ethanol- Ethanol is an alcohol fuel made from the sugars found in grains, such as corn, sorghum, wheat, potato skins, rice, sugar cane, sugar beets, switch grass, and yard clippings. For years, people have questioned the benefits of Ethanol because of the amount of energy used to produce Ethanol. With new technology called anaerobic digestion technology, digestors can be used to digest (like your stomach) a mixture of stillage (a by-product from ethanol production) and manure. This will make methane gas which can be used as fuel.

Biodiesel-Biodiesel is a fuel made from vegetable oils and fats. Biodiesel can be used in diesel engines without changing them at all. It is the fastest growing fuel in the United States because it is a renewable resource and is safe to the environment because it releases lower emissions of almost every pollutant like carbon dioxide, sulfur oxide, particulates, carbon monoxide, air toxics and unburned hydrocarbons.

Energy is there when we need it, but if you don't conserve it this may not always be true. As you probably already know energy costs money. Every year we use more energy than we did the year before. It all adds up, energy is wasted and not used wisely. Most of the energy that we use can't be replaced.
